SEND FLOWERS TO BUFFALO, NY
Buffalo, New York is the second largest city in the state of New York. Situated on Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River, Buffalo was the home of numerous Native American tribes where battles were fought over territory.Early French explorers noted the presence of Iroquioan speaking natives called the Wenrohronon living alongside Lake Erie.
In the mid 1600s the Beaver Wars occurred between a number of Native American tribes and ultimately the Senecas prevailed.
Though a large metropolitan city, Buffalo has always been an advocate of green spaces. In 1868 Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux implemented the Olmsted Park and Parkway System - an innovative concept for the time and the focal point of the city's many green spaces. 75% of the city's parkland is part of the system's six major parks that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places maintained by BOPC (Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy). This non-profit corporation was the first of its kind in the United States.
The city has a number of flora support groups including Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and its Living Shorelines program that promotes the use of native plant life to restore the health of the local ecosystem. Native plants from the area include the Purple Cone Flower and Redosier Dogwood and the horticulturally significant Paw Paw or American Cranberry Bush.
Buffalo is also noted for its spicy flavors – the Buffalo wing with its heat has become a globally known food item, while Buffalo flavoring is now being added to all varieties of food.
